New Delhi, May 6: Following the National Green Tribunals penalty files filed against the Volkswagen Group, the Supreme Court on Monday decided to hear the concern’s plea before the orders. “Till it hears the matter, no coercive steps be taken against the company", the Court said.

The National Green Tribunal, in the month of March had fined German car manufacturer Volkswagen Rs 500 crore in connection with an emissions case. The tribunal then had directed the company to deposit the amount within two months. The NGT had certain claims that the concerns own some cheat device in its desiel cars, creating environmental damages.

In November last year, the tribunal had told Volkswagen to deposit Rs 100 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board within a month for having allegedly flouted environmental norms. Later, a four-member committee set up by the tribunal penalised Volkswagen Rs 171.34 crore for contributing to air pollution in Delhi through excess nitrogen oxide emissions.

Further it was in the month of February that the National Green Tribunal had raised the compensation amount as a means of creating deterrence. It rejected Volkswagen’s objections to the report, and had said that sustainable development was the main guiding factor.

The tribunal meanwhile had directed the Central Pollution Control Board to consider using the penalty towards improving air quality in the National Capital Region and other highly polluted areas.
