Coming together to fight against disaster! Kerala CM to visit the Netherlands for flood prevention and water management

Thiruvananthapuram, May 7: In the last few years, India and the Netherlands have maintained good economic and political relations. In the Kerala flood, the Netherlands helped India for Quick actions for rescue. So enhancing this relationship, Kerala CM, Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan will embark four-nation tour of Europe with a visit to the Netherlands from May 8-12, 2019.

As per the official release by the Indian Embassy, this visit will be at the invitation of the Dutch Government.


Kerala witnessed the biggest floods in 100 years in August 2018. After that, to help in such a situation, two Dutch water exports were a part of UN/ABD/WB/EU mission in Kerala. After this disaster, the Dutch Government sent 4-member Disaster Risk Reduction Mission in March this year. This committee submitted a report on Kuttanad, the region of Kerala which is below sea-level.

The Netherlands is a country who has 26% of land below the sea level so that naturally they are a world leader in flood control and water management. The Netherlands is also the 2nd largest producer of agricultural products, along with high productivity in a high populated area. The country more than half of the land used for agriculture and horticulture.

Kerala CM will visit the Netherlands for their expertise in flood management and flood control during this visit, CM will meet Dutch minister of Infrastructure and water management, Cora Van Nieuwenhuizen and Secretary General of Ministry of agriculture, Mr. Jan Kees Goet.

On this visit, CM will visit the port of Rotterdam to discuss inland water management. He will also meet agricultural exports for the understanding of the latest agricultural techniques. During this visit, he will meet and interact with the Indian community in the Netherlands.
