Golden Moment for India! Women’s Hockey Team Conquers FIH Series; Receives Congratulations from PM

Hiroshima, June 24: Yesterday was a golden Sunday for India as Indian Women’s Hockey team took the crown of the FIH Women’s Series Finals Hiroshima 2019 after defeating hosts Japan 3-1 in the final held at the Hiroshima Hockey Stadium. The winner team received hearty congratulations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


 

An early goal by Indian captain Rani in the 3rd minute supported by two consecutive goals by Gurjit Caur in the 45th and 60th minute saw India register a spectacular victory. Japanese team had fought their best to bring the score to 1-1 equal level at the end of the second quarter. However, the Indian team didn’t give a single chance to Japan to take the ball to the goalpost.

 

Captain Rani was declared as the ‘Best Player’ while Gurjit Kaur proved herself to be the top scorer of the FIH Women’s Series Finals Hiroshima 2019. The World No. 9 Indian Team had already qualified for the FIH Olympic Qualifiers 2019 on Saturday after securing a place in the Final of the competition. FIH Olympic Qualifiers 2019 is set to take place later this year, which is a qualifying event for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

 
“This stupendous victory will further popularize hockey and also inspire many young girls to excel in the sport,” said PM Narendra Modi while congratulating the team. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri, State Minister of Youth affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju and many other MPs congratulated the team India for an outstanding performance.
