Gopichand Creates History! Receives Honorary Doctorate from IIT Kanpur

Kanpur, June 28: Most celebrated former Indian Badminton player, the 2001 All England Open Badminton Championships Winner and India’s current chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand was bestowed upon an honorary doctorate by IIT Kanpur yesterday. The honor was given to him on the occasion of IIT Kanpur’s 52nd convocation.

 
Gopichand received the honour from former ISRO chairman and Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Kanpur, Prof. K Radhakrishnan, along with Infosys Chairperson Sudha Murthy and Missile Women Tessy Thomas. By receiving the award, these three outstanding personalities joined the elite list of former recipients of this prestigious award in former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. 
Pullela Gopichand won All England Open Badminton Championships in 2001 by defeating the then World No. 1 Peter Gade in the semi-final and conquering Chen Hong of China in final to lift the trophy. Thereby he became the second Indian to win the trophy after Prakash Padukone who won in 1980.

Gopichand has won a silver medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and was also the winner of 1999 Toulouse Open Championship in France and the Scottish Open Championship in Scotland. He also bagged the Asian Satellite Tournament held in Hyderabad in the same year.
