As Centre moves resolution in Upper House, opposition give approving nod for extending Prez rule in J&K

New Delhi, July 1: Moving a statutory resolution, Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday tabled to extend the President’s rule for six months in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Central government took this decision as the Election Commission intended to hold assembly polls towards the end of the year. Also, with this, the opposition parties in the Upper House gave their approval by extending support to the Centre’s decision.

The statutory resolution on extending President's rule by another six months with effect from July 3, 2019, was approved by Lok Sabha on Friday. Speaking in the Upper House, Amit Shah asserted, “After assessing the current situation, including security and religious activities, the Election Commission has decided to hold an election in Jammu and Kashmir towards the end of this year. The government did not have any option but to bring this resolution.”

As the opposition questioned the delay in holding assembly polls, Amit Shah mentioned that the assembly elections were never conducted in the past in the state during the month of Ramzan, which was from May 7 to June 4 this year.

He also cited the Amarnath Yatra from June 30 to August 15 and said the Bakarwal community also moves to higher reaches during this time and returns only in October. J-K Governor Satypal Malik had on November 21, 2018, dissolved the 87-member assembly citing apprehensions of horse trading and lack of a credible alternative for government formation. On December 20, 2018, President's rule was imposed.

The opposition parties like the Trinamool Congress, Biju Janata Dal, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party have supported the Centre’s decision on extending the President’s rule. Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ram Gopal Yadav announces in Rajya Sabha that the party will support the extension by 6 months of the President's rule in Jammu & Kashmir which is ending tomorrow.

TMC has supported President's rule in J&K but has raised objection on not conducting polls in the state. Rashtriya Janata Dal spokesperson Manoj Kumar Jha said they support Presidents rule in J&K. Biju Janata Dal is also supporting the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and extension of President's rule in J&K.
