‘JanShakti’ for ‘JalShakti’! India’s great step for water conservation

New Delhi, Jul. 1: India is a country with an abundance of natural resources. But the problem is, the distribution of natural reason is uneven, along with this uneven distribution, sometimes, the administration policies lacked in finding a solution. Water issues are top among these problems. But, Modi 2.0 created a platform to solve this water issue by creating a people's movement.
 
 
 
 
 
Today, Jal Shakti Abhiyan was launched across the country to accelerate water harvesting and conservation measures. The scheme is aimed at making water conservation and promotion of irrigation efficiency a mass movement through asset creation and communication campaigns.
 
 
Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched the scheme in New Delhi.
 
 
 
 
 
In his Mann Ki Baat program on All India Radio, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had yesterday called upon people to start a mass movement for water conservation and resolve to save every drop of water amidst water scarcity in several parts of the country.
 
 
PM Modi said an awareness campaign should be started which should not only focus on water-related problems but also propagate ways to save water.
 
 
On this launch, JalShakti Minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said, “Water conservation is now a national priority; It's time to make conservation a "Jan Andolan”.
 
 
Addressing the issues and aim of the project, Union Minister Shekhawat said, “Officers of Government of India, engineers and district level officers will participate in this important mission; I request all the people to associate themselves with JalShakti Abhiyan”.
 
 
Expressing the concern, he said, “Per capita water availability has dropped a lot in India and we are also one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change; we also only conserve 8% of rainwater”.
 
 
The important aspects of ‘JalShakti Abhiyaan’-
  • The scheme is aimed at making water conservation and promotion of irrigation efficiency a mass movement through asset creation and communication campaigns.
  • Over 250 officers, including Additional and Joint Secretaries, have been appointed as in-charge of water-stressed districts in the country to plan ways to conserve the natural resource.
  • They have been appointed as Central Prabhari Officers of 255 water-stressed districts for coordinating the Jal Shakti Abhiyan. These teams will visit identified blocks and districts, and coordinate the implementation of various water harvesting and conservation measures.
  • JalShakti Abhiyan will be a team effort right from the Center to the district level. Here is a detail of the structure being put in place-

  • JalShanti Abhiyan to have 5 focus areas of intervention-

  • Under JalShanti Abhiyan Focus to be on 256 water stressed districts and 1592 water stressed blocks Each district to have a nodal officer from Government of India and technical officers. 

  • Jal Shanti Abhiyan is a time bound mission mode water conservation campaign with 2 phases Phase 1: 1st July to 15th September 2019 (for all participating States) Phase 2: 1st October to 30th November 2019 (for States with retreating monsoon)
