New Delhi, July 1: Calling upon doctors to be pro-active in educating people, particularly the youth about the dangers of sedentary lifestyles, Vice President M Venkhaiah Naidu on Monday urged to diminish unhealthy food habits in view of the rise in non-communicable diseases.

Interacting with a delegation of Delhi Medical Association on the occasion of Doctors Day, Naidu reminded them of the reverent manner in which doctors are treated by the people and urged the medical fraternity to serve people with empathy and compassion.
Saying that it was important to reach out to the downtrodden and marginalized sections of society with affordable healthcare, he wanted doctors to visit nearby educational institutions in their respective localities and create awareness about the serious impact of a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet on the health of the people.

Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1 all across India to honour and remember physician and second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962, aged 80 years. He was honoured with the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, on February 4, 1961.
