Towards inclusive & equitable quality education, UNESCO presents ‘Education Report on Children with Disabilities’

New Delhi, Jul. 10: UNESCO delegation led by Mr. Eric Falt, Director, UNESCO, New Delhi has called on the Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu today, and presented ‘State of the Education Report for India 2019- Children with Disabilities’.
The report contains 10 recommendations, including amendments to the Right to Education Act to align with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act by incorporating specific concerns of children with disabilities.
To be published annually, the 2019 report is the first of its kind published by UNESCO New Delhi and highlights accomplishments and challenges with regard to the right to education of children with disabilities (CWDs). Based on extensive research of national and international documents of reference, it provides comprehensive and detailed information on the current state of education of CWDs and submits ten key suggestions to policymakers.
Receiving the report, Vice President Naidu said, "it was timely as the Government was in the midst of formulating a new education policy".
He said that the education of children with disabilities was receiving the special attention of the government and the country was steadily moving towards inclusive and equitable quality education.
Expressing confidence that the report would provide useful inputs, the Vice President said, "India always believed in adopting the best practices from across the globe".
He said that the need of the hour was to promote inclusive education and hoped that the government would positively consider the suggestions made in the report as inputs to the new National Policy on Education is currently debated.
On this occasion, Mr. Falt also presented a map of the world heritage sites in India to the Vice President. On this present, VP Naidu tweeted, “Happy to have received UNESCO’s Map of World Heritage Sites of India from Mr. Eric Falt, Director, UNESCO in New Delhi today. The sites represent our vibrant natural & cultural heritage. I applaud UNESCO's efforts towards identification & mapping of the sites for conservation”.
