Changing course, flood in Assam recedes as Bihar still reels under the dark spell of natural calamity

Guwahati, July 17: As the situation deepens in flood hit areas, the disaster management team works hard to save lives by taking them to safer places and relief camps. While the situation in Assam has come under control, the state of Bihar still reels under the dark spell of flood. Taking cognizance of the situation it has been noted that the condition in upper Assam has started improving due to the receding of water but the situation in Lower Assam remains unchanged. 18 persons, so far, have lost their lives due to flood and landslides.

In Assam, more than 50 lakh people are affected in 30 districts and over one lakh people have taken shelter at relief camps. Five columns of the army are pressed into rescue work. Six animals including 2 rhinos drowned in the Kaziranga National Park. Centre has released 251 crore rupees to Assam for disaster management.

 

The Brahmaputra river reached the danger level as many districts of Assam reeled under flood. CM Sarbananda Sonowal thanked the Centre for giving priority to solve flood and erosion problem in Assam. He urged Union Jal Shakti Minister to get 5000 kilometres of embankments repaired.

 

In Bihar, flood situation has worsened after some new areas inundated in Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Katihar, Purnea and Muzaffarpur districts. Due to enormous pressure and overtopping of floodwater, the embankment has been broken in Benipatti subdivision in Madhubani and Muzaffarpur.

 

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar yesterday took stock of the situation in East and West Champaran. Over 26 lakh people have been due to floods in the state.
