Eyeing to receive benefits or subsidy; Centre along with RBI asks individuals for Aadhaar Authentication

New Delhi, July 17: With the parliament appraising and passing the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019, the Centre in participation with the Reserve Bank of India has decided to ask for Aadhaar authentication as establishing identity for individuals who are desirous of receiving any benefit or subsidy.

 
 
The RBI, in its master direction on KYC in 2016 had asked the banks to obtain the Aadhaar number from individuals who were desirous of receiving any benefit or subsidy under any scheme notified under the Aadhaar Act, 2016.
 
The bill passed this time, inter-alia, has the provision for allowing the use of Aadhaar authentication on voluntary basis as acceptable Know Your Customer document, by referring to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
 
“If an Aadhaar number is not assigned to an individual, the individual shall be offered alternate and viable means of identification for delivery of the subsidy, benefit or service”, read the statement released by the Finance Minister in relation.
 
“The linking of the bank accounts with Aadhaar for receiving subsidy or direct benefit transfers from the Government, including the state government is done as per the extant provisions of the Aadhaar Act, 2016”, he signed off.
