New Delhi, July 8: India’s most-capped international, captain of the football team Sunil Chhetri surpassed Lionel Messi to become the second-highest international goalscorer among active players when he scored a fourth-minute penalty against Tajikistan in the international Cup on Sunday.

Although India had to face a defeat, Sunil left a moment of pride for India by creating a world-record. The skipper scored his 69th international goal with a clever panenka to go second on the list, only below Cristiano Ronaldo who has 88 international goals for Portugal. In the match against Tajikistan, Chhetri started the scoring by ‘Panenka’ penalty into the back of the net. The 34-year-old then kept his nerves and slotted home the ball fro Mandar Rao Desai in the 41st minute to give India a 2-0 lead on the brink of half-time.

Sunil Chhetri is the most capped player for Indian team and has played 109 games. He was also one of the most important players for the Blue Tigers when they qualified for AFC Asian Cup for the first time in 27 years in 2011. Sunil became the only the 17th player in the history of the sport to sport to score 70 or more goals.
