New Delhi, August 22: After severe efforts of climbing the walls and keeping a watch on the new economic absconder, the CBI on Wednesday ended the traditional ‘Chor-police’ game by arresting the Congress leader P Chidambaram, being accused in the INX media case. The charges against the former FM further are that of wrongdoing, money laundering and misusing the post of finance minister.

The man who once held the portfolios of home and finance ministry, spent night at the CBI lockup after he evaded arrest for 24 hours. Terming the said arrest as deeply distressing, Congress leader Salman Khurshid, with a worried stance said that the party was confident there was no case against him.

Meanwhile, after the Supreme Court decided to send the file to CJI, his defence head Kapil Sibal said, “It's a matter of great concern to us as members of legal fraternity, also it should be a matter of concern as citizens. All we wanted was a hearing, the presiding judge chose instead to say that I am sending the file to CJI. Isn't a citizen entitled to be heard?”
However, “He lost his dignity on his own”, said Satya Pal Singh, Baghpat BJP MP adding that Chidambaran was an intellectual and knew the law and that he should not have behaved like this after court's order. “What happened was not good, had he surrendered earlier, his dignity would have remained intact”, he said.
After the arrest yesterday night, Chidambaram was brought inside CBI headquarters where doctors asked him a few questions on his health. He was later left in lock up guarded by two CBI officials who remained 24x7 outside the suite and CCTV cameras. After quizzing him, he will be produced before the court today.
