New Delhi, September 13: Waking ahead in P Chidambaram's attempt to escape the Tihar thwarts, the Delhi High Court on Friday rejected his request to surrender to the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case, ordering him to be in jail following his arrest by CBI.

The Enforcement Directorate had on Thursday told the court that P Chidambaram's arrest was necessary in the INX Media money laundering case and it will do so at an appropriate time.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram meanwhile said that ED had come to the Congress leader's house to arrest him on August 20 and 21 but now they do not want to do so just to ensure that he remains in judicial custody.

The CBI had registered a First Information Report on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs. 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram's tenure as the finance minister.

Later this month he was arrested by the CBI on August 21 and sent to the custody for interrogation. Last week, a CBI court sent Chidambaram to judicial custody in Tihar jail till September 19.
