Bharathidasan University receives Best University Award for Excellent performance in NSS program

New Delhi, September 26: India’s reputed Bharathidasan University (BDU) of Tamil Nadu has received the Best University Award from the National Service Scheme Program for the year 2017-18 from President Ram Nath Kovind yesterday.

 
BDU has the largest number of NSS units in a State university in Tamil Nadu. With funding from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, the NSS Cell, through its NSS volunteers in affiliated colleges, planted 1,79,220 tree saplings, donated 36,502 units of blood, conducted 972 medical camps, conducted 2,27,259 awareness Programmes related to various social issues, and performed 421 Swachh Bharat activities in the last three years in the adopted villages.
 
The NSS Cell of BDU leveraged Corporate Social Responsibility funding of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, to supply and instal electrical incinerators in government schools and colleges for safe disposal of sanitary napkins. In all, 181 incinerators worth ₹60 lakh were installed in 174 institutions. Besides, various assets worth ₹4 crore were created through NSS.
In appreciation of the activities, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, honoured BDU with the NSS Award in the university category.
