Crafting a clean environment, Prez Kovind confers Swachh Bharat Award to Indian Railways

New Delhi, September 6: Began with an idea, now has become a national movement; the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan started by the government has been imbibed by each and every citizen in crafting a clean and safe environment. For the efforts taken, the President Ram Nath Kovind graced and addressed the Swachh Mahotsav 2019, at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. He felicitated Indian Railways and Vaishno Devi Shrine Board for their outstanding contribution in Swachh Bharat Mission.

Organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the President presented the Swachh Bharat Awards in various categories. Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in Jammu and Kashmir received the Best Swachh Iconic Place award. The Shrine was selected on the basis of the overall improvement in sanitation. Railways Ministry was given Swachh Award in the category of Swachhta Action Plan.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said Swachh Bharat Mission has become people’s campaign. He said construction of toilets across the country have helped in maintaining the dignity of women as well as their empowerment. President Kovind also described cleanness as the pathway to success. He noted that Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations are to be achieved by 2030. But, India is set to achieve cleanliness targets 11 years ahead, that is in 2019 itself. He said that it is a matter of pride for us and every citizen of the country deserves appreciation for this achievement.

Foreseeing a brightening vision, the President said that India has to move forward, adopting the broader meaning of cleanliness. For example, providing clean drinking water also comes under the purview of sanitation. Cleanliness is also an essential condition for the success of 'Jal Jeevan Mission' launched by the Government of India this year.
