Govt to spend 100 lakh crore on infrastructure: PM Modi

Mumbai, Sept 7: Reiterating his commitment and resolve to provide better infrastructure to the citizens Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday laid foundation for three metro lines in Mumbai and inaugurated the first metro coach made by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a state-run company under Make In India.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Ramdas Athavale, State Higher Education Minster Vinod Tawde, Shiv Sena Pramukh Uddhav Thackeray and other dignitaries were prominently present at the function attended by a large gathering at the Jio World Centre’s convention centre, close to MMRDA Grounds in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Congratulating Mumbai citizens for their contribution in taking the country forward, Prime Minister Modi said that the country is marching towards a $5 trillion economy and for this it is necessary to work on mobility, connectivity, productivity and sustainability. The government will spend Rs 100 lakh crore on infrastructure development. Cities like Mumbai will derive benefits from these schemes, he added.

Modi said that employment to 10000 engineers and 40000 skilled and unskilled workers will be provided with improved infrastructure. He recalled how the first metro rail was introduced in the country some three decades ago. However, by 2014, the metro reached 27 cities. There is 645 km metro network out of which over 400 km network was developed in the last five years, he added. The government has granted permission to another 600 km metro line as part of its commitment to develop modern infrastructure in the country under ‘Ek Bharat Shreth Bharat’ scheme.

“The projects will not only benefit Mumbai but entire Maharashtra. We are making an integrated system to connect each medium. The Mumbai metropolitan region will also get a good transportation system,” he added.

Praising the efforts of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Prime Minister Modi said that in the last five years Chief Minister Fadnavis has toiled hard to make this dream project a reality. The state government has worked honestly and sincerely towards the development of Mumbai.

Modi also said that by 2023-24, metro connectivity in Mumbai will exceed more than 300 km. At present, the city has connectivity of 11 km.

The indigenous coach, the first of 500 to be delivered to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, was built by BEML at its Bengaluru facility in 75 days.

The three new metro lines take the total number of metro lines to 14 across the Mumbai metropolitan region. The new corridors are the 9.2-km Gaimukh-Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) metro-10; the 12.8-km Wadala-CST metro-11; and the 20.7-km Kalyan-Taloja metro-12 corridor.

 

Modi also laid the foundation for the 32-storey Metro Bhavan at the Aarey Colony, one of the two large green belts of the megaplois. The metro headquarters will be the integrated operations and control centre for the proposed metro lines in and around Mumbai.

Earlier, the Prime Minister visited the Lokmanya Sewa Sangh Ganeshotsava and offered prayer and puja of Lord Ganesha. The Ganesh Utsav is celebrating its centenary this year.

 

Praising the endurance and attitude of the Mumbaikars, Modi congratulated them for their ability to overcome the vagaries of nature and resume their regular routine. He said that he was taking regular information and feedback of rain havoc in Mumbai while he was in Russia.

 

He complimented the ISRO scientists for their achievement of Chaandrayan 2 mission. Though the lander Vikram could not land on the surface of the Moon’s South Pole at the last minute, he patted the scientists for their success and encouraged them not to get disheartened and lose patience.
He said that he was astonished to see their courage and patience and concentration. “I have come here to draw inspiration from you”, he said.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Shiv Sena Pramukh Uddhav Thackeray also spoke on this occasion.
