Swami Vivekananda had years ago said that the ‘best thermometer to the progress of a nation is its treatment of its women’. Setting a foundation for this regulator, indicting where a woman in India stands, Drishti, a Women Study Centre, floated by the RSS affiliated women group, projects to unveil the canvas painted with a complete unabridged picture. The study, ‘Status of Women in India’, takes the society to the interiors that have never been explored; connecting it to that each woman who felt cared for, for the very first time in her life.

The status of Women in India has always been that of a concern. Being a non-earning member, it further expands women vulnerability and increases women dependability on their male counterparts. Countering the situation, the BJP led government, in past 6 years has gone beyond the physicality to address women’s issues and taken a more holistic view of things. It has sought to foster women empowerment in a comprehensive programme that deals with five components of security: health security of the mother and child, social security, financial security, security of the future through educational and financial programmes through growing up years, and last but no least, the physical safety of women.

Hoping the said review further to be of great benefit to the Central, State Govt and also other voluntary organisations, the Woman Study Centre firmly assures any government or NGO to draw their policies, activities, focus areas based on these survey reports. Apart from the primary objective, studies like these seek to address the popular perception of the RSS as one of the world's largest social organisations, with total membership between five and six million. It says is committed to the overall progress of society, with women playing an important role. The Rashtriya Sevika Samiti, RSS affiliated women group, has conducted numerous similar surveys and studies over the past few years, publishing reports titled 'Women in Trafficking: Realities and Solutions', and 'Women in Decision Making' and more.

These also answer some of the questions that the forums and the Sangh's ideological opponents have used to pillory RSS leaders over the years.. questions relating to how the RSS views women, whether women are given equal status to men in the Sangh's world view, in professional, social, and other spheres. The attempt, Sangh insiders say, has been to project the RSS as a retrograde, patriarchal organisation, and studies like these reveal the RSS's actual position on matters such as women's employment.
Spread over the five important geographical regions, 29 states, 5 UTs and 465 districts, the analysis involves a huge sample study size comprising of 43, 255 women pan India, probably leaving no of female gal type retrogressed. “We initiated the survey to meet the clear picture of the Women in India. We met them, asked about their education, health and employment. The issues faced, even today by the women are multidimensional, spread in broader area”, noted Dr Anjali Deshpande, Secretary, Drishti Stree Adhyayan Prabodhan Kendra.

DRISHTI, has been working for years to develop deeper understanding of the vitally important impressions of a woman’s life and the effects followed. Primarily undergoing the condition of a woman, the authorized report also recommends measures to improve the society by focusing on women impressions, further open for the government to adopt towards a ‘New India’. Changes do not happen overnight. One has to make a choice to take a chance at creating a difference. They Made Their Choice, Now It’s Your Turn!
