Maharashtra retains championship; Third Khelo India Youth Games conclude with colourful ceremony

Guwahati, January 23: With Maharashtra retaining championship for the second consecutive time, curtain came down on third Khelo India Youth Games with a colourful closing ceremony at Nabin Chandra Bordoloi indoor stadium in Guwahati yesterday evening, in the presence of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and MoS Food and processing industries Rameshwar Teli.

The Minister handed over the champions trophy to Maharashtra, first runner up trophy to Haryana and second runner up trophy to Delhi. Kiren Rijiju said, "I am confident that from among this year's winners will emerge our future champions who will represent India at international events and even at the Olympics, in the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. Our motto has been to provide the best facilities and a world class experience to athletes at the Khelo India Games."
 
Maharashtra maintained its supremacy in Khelo India Youth Games, improving upon its last year’s performance, to finish on top of the table with a massive haul of 256 medals, comprising 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze. Haryana came second with 200 medals (68 gold, 60 silver, 72 bronze), followed by Delhi at third with 122 medals (39 gold, 36 silver, 47 bronze).
 
 
 
On the final day, Delhi’s Rohit Mor edged out Bhavesh 3-2 in a gripping contest to emerge as the boy’s 52kg champion in boxing. In swimming, with eight medals, Karnataka’s Srihari Nataraj, who won 50m backstroke (26.27) and 100m freestyle (52.58) in under-21 group, shared the limelight with Assam’s Shivangi Sarma, who won five gold and two silver, to be the most successful girl from the pool.
 
Rameshwar Teli said, “The tournament is a big boost towards achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long term vision of Fit India movement.
 
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal saluted the hard work of all athletes who participated in the games. He said their aim was to provide the best facilities and a world class experience to athletes at the Khelo India Games. 
 
 
 
The picturesque city of Guwahati bid an emotional goodbye to the Khelo India Youth Games on closing ceremony. Assam showcased their rich cultural heritage in a crisp and beautiful show, led by a Modern Creative Dance performance by Aimee Baruah. Chinese Martial Artists wowed the audience with their speed and power. They were specially flown in to mark the 70th year of the India-China friendship. Performances by Missing Dancers, Jhumuir Dancers and a solo by Babita Sharma set the mood for the evening.
 
Popular Assamese singer Jitul Sonowal too charmed everybody.The evening was topped up by live performance of Bollywood singing star Shaan.
