Guwahati, January 3: As the nation saw states boiling in rage over the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act, one state hit the streets from the very beginning was Assam. Fearing to lose its ethnicity, tradition and culture, the people of the state hit streets protesting against the Act. However, time and again, the Centre and the state government has assured the citizens that they will duly protect the indigenous people of the state and keep their needs on priority. Furthermore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also slammed Congress for misleading the masses by providing misinformation.

Amid the uproar on CAA, the state government pledged that ‘not a single illegal foreigner can enter and settle in the state.’ The BJP unit of Assam blamed the Congress for ‘sowing seeds of influx’ and ‘imposing the burden of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh on the state’ by making 1971 cut-off year (while linking the Assam Accord 1985) instead of 1951. However, during this 1951-1971 period, lot of illegal immigrants entered the state and the number could not be specified as there is no record of application during the 20-year-old period.

CM Sarbananda Sonowal said, “People should have no doubt or confusion in their mind regarding this law (CAA). We have many plans regarding protection of their interests...I want to assure all 'khilonjiya bhumiputras' (sons of the soil) that they are completely secure and there is no power that can endanger their existence.” Sonowal said that no new people will come into India and "even if they try, we will not allow it...a cut-off date of December 31, 2014 has been fixed as eligibility for the citizenship". "If one reads the rules, it will become clear that no Bangladeshi or anybody from some other countries can take advantage of the Act to enter our country.

In regard to CAA, the state BJP President Ranjeet Kumar Dass asserted that not a single memorandum was given by any organisation to the Centre stating that Assam should be exempted from the ambit of the legislation. However, the BJP President stated that the party respects the verdict given by the Supreme Court and no party is above the law. Dass also said that the party is against all those who are trying to conspire and mislead the nation by misinforming the masses and vandalising public property.
