New Delhi, January 3: Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have condemned the attacks on the US Embassy at Baghdad in Iraq. In a statement, Bahrain's Foreign Ministry stressed the need for all parties in Iraq to adhere to responsibility and restraint. It also affirmed the position of the Kingdom of Bahrain that supports the efforts of the Iraqi government to establish security and stability and strengthen the rule of law in the country.

Thousands of Iran-backed militiamen and their supporters broke into the American Embassy in Baghdad after the US carried out airstrikes against the Kataib Hezbollah armed group. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attacks as a violation of international norms and conventions.

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Thursday Washington is certain the attack on the embassy compound was carried out by Iran-supported Iraqi Shiite militias because key leaders of them were seen in the crowd. He specifically referred to Kataib Hezbollah, a militia that is part of the Iraqi government-sanctioned Popular Mobilization Forces.
The protesters, many from Kataib Hezbollah, were angered by weekend air strikes by US forces that killed 25 of their supporters, said by Washington to be retaliation for rocket attacks on December 27 that killed a US civilian contractor.
