New Delhi, Jan 6: The much awaited elections to Delhi Assembly will be held on February 8, 2020, announced the Election Commission today at a press conference.

Voting will be held for all the 70 assembly seats in this single phase election. Counting will be held on February 11 and results will be declared on the same day. Nearly 14.7 million voters will vote on 13750 polling booths to elect their representatives.

Notification for the elections will be issued on January 14. However, the model code of conduct has come into effect with the announcement of the election program by the CEC today.

Delhi is under the Aam Adami Party (AAP) rule for the last five years and the party is facing a tough challenge from the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The last elections saw meteoric rise of AAP with the party bagging 67 out of 70 seats leaving only 3 seats for the BJP. The Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has doled out a number of soaps for the citizens especially for women like free travel in Delhi Metro and buses, to win over the electorate.

The BJP is banking on the various loopholes of the AAP government.

The term of the 70-member Delhi Assembly is ending on February 22 and a new House has to be constituted before that.

The contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC), Citizenship Amendment Act, air pollution, women’s safety, and statehood demand for Delhi likely to dominate the election narrative.
