E-commerce giants receive govt notice for not showing mandatory info about products

New Delhi, October 17: E-commerce majors Amazon and Flipkart have come under the scanner of the government, as the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, has issued notices to e-commerce for non-declaration of mandatory disclosure, including the 'Country of Origin' on specific products.

In the notice, the department has asked the states to ensure compliance of rules by all e-commerce companies.
 
According to the notice, while examining the concerned advertisements, it was found that the mandatory declarations were not mentioned as per the norms under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodity) Rules.
 
The department has asked all e-commerce entities for ensuring compliance of Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules. The ministry asked both the companies have been asked to reply within 15 days.
 
"It has been brought into notice that some of the e-commerce entities are not displaying the mandatory declaration on digital platforms required under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011," the notice said.
 
The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules provides that an e-commerce entity has to ensure that the mandatory declarations (including the country of origin), except the month and year in which the commodity is manufactured or packed, "shall be displayed on the digital and electronic network used for e-commerce transactions".
 
From 30 September, the government makes it mandatory for all e-commerce firms to comply with the norm to tag the 'Country of Origin' on all items being sold.
 
Meanwhile, both the e-commerce platforms are yet to issue public statements to the government's notices.
 
This came against the backdrop of calls to boycott Chinese goods following border clashes between India and China in Ladakh.
