K'taka CM reviews rain situation, announces Rs 25,000 compensation for affected families

Bengaluru, October 24: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa reviewed the disruption caused by heavy rains in Bengaluru with the officials of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike officials after Bengaluru receives widespread rain on Friday. Yediyurappa also announced a compensation of Rs 25,000 for every family affected by flooding caused due to torrential rains in several parts of the city.

"To all those who have faced destruction to their food grains, cloths, and other things because of water entering houses due to flooding and rain, we have decided to give a compensation of Rs 25,000 per family through cheque... we are taking all the precautionary measures if there are rains today or in coming days," Yediyurappa said.
 
He directed the Municipal Commissioner Manjunath Prasad to clear waterlogging that has caused extensive hardship to citizens. The Chief Minister later visited Hoskerehalli where waterlogging was reported yesterday. He interacted with people in the locality and assured them of resolving the water logging problem.
 
 
The direction comes a day after several parts of the city, especially the south Bengaluru region had faced the brunt of heavy rains as stormwater drains overflowed, roads turned into rivulets and many houses were inundated.
 
The rains and stormwater wreaked havoc in the southern parts of the city on Friday evening. According to the weather department, Bengaluru has received more than 100 mm of rainfall. After which several areas, especially the south Bengaluru region had faced the brunt as stormwater drains overflowed, roads turned into rivulets and many houses were inundated.
 
While there was water logging in many parts of the city, areas such as Hosakerehalli, Nayandahalli, Basavanagudi, Bommanahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and surrounding places were affected as several roads and houses in these areas were submerged underwater.
 
Revenue Minister R Ashoka, who visited the affected areas earlier in the day had assured that he will speak to the Chief Minister regarding providing relief to those affected and directed officials to carry out the survey work.
 
Bengaluru has received 66.8 mm rainfall between 8.30 am on Tuesday and 5.30 am on Wednesday.
 
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru for the next two days, which means the city will be receiving anywhere between 64 mm to 115 mm rain.
