India exceeds WHO's COVID-19 tests advisory by 6 times

New Delhi, October 5: In a bid to contain the COVID-19 cases, India exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) comprehensive surveillance advisory on per day COVID testing by almost 6 times with 828 tests/day per million population, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Monday.

"WHO in its Guidance Note on “Public Health Criteria to Adjust Public Health and Social Measures in the Context of COVID-19” has advised that a country needs 140 tests/day/million population for comprehensive surveillance of suspected cases," the MoHFW's tweet read.
 
 
The ministry further said that several states and Union Territories have demonstrated a better performance than the national average. According to the statistics shown by the Ministry, all states and UTs are performing more than 140 tests per day-per million population. As per a graph shared by the Union Health Ministry, India is performing 828 tests per day per million population, as per the latest data. Delhi with a testing average of 2,717 stands at the top in the country, followed by Goa (1,319), and Karnataka (1,261).
 
Meanwhile, the known hotspot of the COVID-19 Maharastra is at the bottom of the list, with 595 tests being conducted per day per million population. Moreover, India's coronavirus tally crossed the 66-lakh mark on Monday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country stands at 66,23,816, including 9,34,427 active cases
 
India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7 with 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5. It went past 50 lakh on September 16 and passed the 60 lakh mark on September 28. The WHO in its guidance Note on “Public Health Criteria to Adjust Public Health and Social Measures in the Context of COVID-19” has advised that a country needs 140 tests per day per million population for comprehensive surveillance of suspected cases.
