Bengaluru, December 15: Karnataka Legislative Council witnessed a very shameful full act on Tuesday after Congress legislative council members heckled and pushed the deputy chairman from the chair.

Following the incident, the house was adjourned sine die without taking up any business.

BJP had called a session on the direction of the Governor to move a no-confidence motion against Pratap Chandra Shetty, chairman of the Legislative Council. BJP, which has less number in the Legislative Council, had planned to remove the council Chairman of Congress with the support of JDS.

While the ruckus broke out after a no-confidence motion was to be brought against the president of the council. After which BJP demanded that Shetty cannot preside over the proceedings since a no-confidence was being brought against him. It said that the deputy Chairman should preside of the proceedings in such a case. Following which the Deputy Chairman and MLC Bhoje Gowda of JDS were asked to take the seat. This angered the Congress MLCs who rushed to the chair demanding that he vacate it, following which BJP and JD(S) members came to Shetty's protection.

In a video Congress MLCs, including M Narayanaswamy, can be seen heckling and pushing the Deputy Chairman, Gowda, from his seat. Separately, few Congress members were seen forcefully opening the door through which the Chairman enters the house, accusing the ruling side of shutting it with an intention not to allow Shetty to enter the House.

Condemning the incident, BJP leader S Prakash termed the action “unfortunate.” He said, “The Legislative Council is known as the House of Elders and responsible behavior is expected from members across parties. Dirty politics have taken over the Council leading to the Chairman not resigning by himself after Congress lost majority to BJP and JD(S) coming together.”

Several members and marshals of the council were also allegedly manhandled in the melee, even as the Congress managed to make one of its members occupy the chair. After some time Chairman Pratapachandra Shetty entered the House and went up to the chair even as Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwath Narayan tried to obstruct him from occupying it. Shetty then announced that the house was adjourned sine die.

It should be noted that the Karnataka Legislative Council was adjourned sine die five days earlier. The Winter Session was originally scheduled between December 7 and 15. It was, however, cut short.
