In 1964, Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri had attended an event at the Aligarh Muslim University. Even before Shastri ji, the first Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had visited the University four times. Pandit Nehru had visited the Aligarh University campus first time in 1948 and lastly in 1963.

The University Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor said the AMU community is thankful to the PM Modi for accepting the invitation to participate in the celebrations marking 100 years of the university.

According to University officials Prime Minister Modi will release a special postal stamp to mark the occasion. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will also join the event virtually.

Earlier, PM Modi had also attended an event at the JNU in Delhi which has always been an epicenter of several protests and during his address he had asked the students to keep national interest above ideologies and not accept status quo without a debate.

The students of AMU have also been involved in similar circumstances and thus PM Narendra Modi's presence at the centenary celebration of Aligarh Muslim University is important.

AMU has been the centre for protests against the Modi government over issues such as the abrogation of Article 370 that discarded the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and had have been involved in protests against CAA. Students of the University have also declared their support to the ongoing farmers' protests on the borders of the national capital.
