Former J & K CM Farooq Abdullah set free

New Delhi, Mar 13: Senior National Conference leader, former Chief Minister of J & K Farooq Abdullah who was detained by the Government in the wake of abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, was Friday released.

According to reports, Farooq Abdullah was arrested on September 15, 2019, under the J & K Public Safety Act. He was earlier detained on August 5, 2019, when the Central Government revoked the special status on that day.

J & K Government spokesman Rohit Kansal said that Farooq Abdullah was set free as the J & K government issued orders revoking his detention.

The order signed by Principal Secretary, Home, Shaleen Kabra said that the detention of Farooq Abdullah under the Public safety Act (PSA) issued on september 15, has been withdrawn, ending his detention immediately.

The octogenarian leader of the National Conference was stay put under house arrest after he was detained under the PSA in his own house on Gupkar Road. His detention was extended by another three months by the J & K Administration.

Farooq Abdullah is the first to be released amongst the three detained former chief minsiters. His son Omar Abdullah and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti still continue to be under detention.

It may be mentioned that NCP leader Sharad Pawar had demanded the release of these three leaders in J & K. Farooq Abdullah’s release was welcomed by Congress leader Shashi Tharur and People’s Conference leader Imran Ansari.
