Bhopal, Mar 20: Ahead of facing the floor test mandated by the Supreme Court, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath preferred to resign from the post as the party fell short of a majority in the House after the resignation of 22 MLAs. He submitted his papers to Governor Lalji Tandon Friday.

Talking to reporters Kamal Nath said he has decided to resign, but would continue to serve the people of the state irrespective of the post. Meanwhile, Speaker N. P. Prajapati adjourned the Assembly sine die.

Earlier, in the morning senior Congress leader and former state Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, who had dashed to Bangalore to woo the defecting MLAs, told a news channel that since the Congres did not enjoy the majority any longer, Chief Minister Kamal Nath would resign.

Following high political drama in the State resulted out of the rebellion by senior Congress leader and scion of Gwalior Jyotiraditya Scindia and his ‘faithful’ 22 MLAs the Congress government was reduced to a minority. But refusing to accept the ground reality, Kamal Nath, Digvijay Singh, and Jitu Patwari tried to woo the rebel MLAs to save the government. The Speaker N. P. Prajapati too refused to follow the Governor’s instruction to conduct the floor test to prove the majority of the Kamal Nath government.

The BJP moved the Supreme Court on this issue and after hearing the Supreme Court bench of Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Hemant Gupta passed an order for conducting the floor test on Friday by 5 pm under the video recording of the entire procedure.

But instead of facing the floor test, Chief Minister Kamal Nath chose to resign than to test defeat in the House.

After the directive of the Supreme Court, the Speaker had late night accepted the resignation of the remaining 16 MLAs loyal to the Scindia group thus paving the way for the ouster of the Kamal Nath government. He had already accepted the resignations of six MLAs earlier.

“I have accepted the resignation of the 16 MLAs who have filed a petition in the Supreme Court. Based on what they have stated there, I am accepting the resignation of these 16 MLAs also,” Prajapati told reporters.

With these resignations, the working strength of the State Assembly came to 206 against the actual strength of 220. That required 104 seats for a majority and the BJP has 107 while the Congress strength was reduced to 92. Thus, it was crystal clear that the BJP enjoyed a majority in the House. But Chief Minister Kamal Nath refused to see the writings on the wall.
