Washington, March 21: US Vice president Mike Pence's staff member has been tested positive for the epidemic. This is the first case of a White House staffer being tested positive for the deadly virus. “This evening we were notified that a member of the Office of the Vice President tested positive for the Coronavirus,” Pence’s spokesperson Katie Miller said in a statement.

“Neither President Trump nor Vice President Pence had close contact with the individual", he added. Miller said the vice president’s office was notified on Friday evening while contact tracing was being conducted by guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pence said Monday that he had not been tested for the virus.

Also President Donald Trump has tested negative for the virus, after coming into contact at his Florida resort with Brazilian officials who later tested positive for the disease. Several members of the White House staff who interacted with the Brazilian delegation or others who tested positive for the virus have worked from home as a precaution, fortunately none of them are known to have contracted the virus.

However, the White House has instituted strict provisions for the entry of individuals within its premises. Members of the presidential physicians' team and secret service take the temperature of every individual who enters the premises. At least 236 people have died and thousands have been infected so far amidst worries about the health system’s capacity to cope with the outbreak.
