New Delhi, March 23 : Amid the deadly outbreak of COVID-19 in India, people from the country's northeastern states are facing racism due to their mongoloid features. Delhi police on Monday registered a case under IPC Section 509 against a man who racially abused Manipuri girl by alleged calling her 'corona' and spitting on her in North Delhi.

The incident took place at around 9.30 pm when two students went out of their PG to get some groceries while a middle-aged man on a white-colored two-wheeler drove by and racially abused the girl by allegedly calling her 'corona'. He also spat tobacco on her t-shirt, a photo of which has gone viral on social media.
Earlier a similar case was reported on March 3, when two students from the Northeast were attacked by six men in Kamla Nagar, Near Delhi University’s North Campus. They were also called 'coronavirus'. People from northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Manipur are often targeted for their Mongoloid features. The coronavirus outbreak has further triggered discrimination against these Indians as the virus was first reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
Earlier the racial slurs stuck to being called Chowmein, Chinki or Nepali. Now, because of the pandemic and because of the Mongolian features they are called Coronavirus. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju as well took on twitter and expressed concern over racism. He tweeted, "Some incidents of racial remarks against North-East people have emerged in some parts of India in the wake of #Coronavirus due to cultural ignorance, prejudice mindset & lack of understanding. The matter discussed with NE Division, MHA. The strict advisory is being issued to the States."
