Speaking at a press conference, Ryan said, "the future of this pandemic will largely depend on what densely populated countries like India and China do to tackle this unprecedented health crisis."

"India is a very populous country and the future of this virus will be considered in a very highly & densely populated country. India led the world in eradicating two pandemics, small-pox, and polio so India has a tremendous capacity. It's really important that India continues to take aggressive action at the public health level, and at the level of society to control, suppress this disease and save lives," Ryan said.

"There are no easy answers. It is exceptionally important that countries like India show the way to the world as they have done before," he further added.

Ryan’s remarks assume significance as they have come at a time when India imposed strict lockdown measures to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the government of India has announced a complete lockdown in 30 states covering 548 districts. The unprecedented decision was taken in the wake of the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus. The government also declared that the domestic flights would also not be operational from midnight of March 24 until March 31.

The virus has infected 3,81,293 people in the world and killed 16,572, the World Health Organization and additional sources. The virus has affected 168 countries so far. However, 415 confirmed cases of the novel Coronavirus including 7 deaths have been reported in India.
