MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan wins trust vote; State Assembly adjourned till March 27

Bhopal, March 25: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday proved his majority by winning the trust vote in the Assembly. The Congress MLAs boycotted the State Assembly proceedings of the day and the house has now been adjourned till March 27. State Assembly Speaker N P Prajapati had resigned late yesterday night, hours after Chouhan took oath as Chief Minister of the state.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan needed support from 104 MLAs. He was backed by 107 of his own lawmakers, but also by the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and independents. In total, he enjoys the support of 112 MLAs. No Congress MLAs were present in the assembly for voting. Chouhan was back as the Chief Minister on Monday for a record fourth term in Madhya Pradesh.
 
The legislator from Budhni took oath of office at a simple function in Raj Bhawan last night, where he was sworn-in by Governor Lalji Tandon. Earlier, Congress's Kamal Nath had to resign as Chief Minister after his government lost majority following the resignation of 22 Congress MLAs.
 
State assembly budget session was reconvened on Tuesday with only agenda of the BJP government led by Chouhan seeking a trust vote in the state assembly. In the 230-member Assembly, the BJP has 107 legislators. The Congress' strength has now been reduced to 92 following the resignation of its 22 MLAs. At present, 24 seats in the Assembly are lying vacant, reducing the size of the house to 206.
