Indian Paddler Takeme Sarkar grounded in Spain amid Coronavirus

Malaga, March 27: Aiming to play in the Spanish League in Spain, the Indian paddler Takeme Sarkar has found herself stuck in an apartment here due to the lockdown in India in the wake of coronavirus outbreak with all the international flights coming to the country being suspended.

The table tennis player who is 14th nationally ranked by the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), went to Spain to take part in the Spanish League which was supposed to start from February and continue till May. Hailing from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, said she had booked the flight for a March 24 back home but with India under 21-day lockdown, she had to change her plans.
 
"I am fine here. My club members are very supportive, they are providing food and everything. They had booked my return tickets on 24th March but due to flights getting canceled, I could not come back. I’ve got another ticket for May 11, and hopefully, the situation will become normal by then, and I will return," said Takeme in a statement.
 
"My parents have been very supportive, my coach has always given me suggestions for everything and is also guiding me. “I’m staying put at home the whole day and cooking myself. Three other Japanese girls are also here with me,” she added.
 
Takeme, along with Sagarika Mukherjee and Moumita Dutta, is the reigning national champions. She was a part of the Railways team that had won the team trophy in the last Nationals held in Telangana. She had gone to Spain to train and played some matches for a club called "Hotel Museo Patria Chica", which is one of the participants in the Spanish League.s.
 
According to the latest reports, Spain has recorded a total of almost 49,000 cases including 3,647 deaths.
