Making his debut in 2000, he had played under few captains like Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Kohli. In an interview to a private channel, he said "I have played under Sourav and had a lot of support from him. Then Mahi took over. It's a difficult choice to make between Sourav and Mahi. I have more memories of time under Sourav because of the support he gave me. I didn't have that kind of support from Mahi and Virat."

The 37-year-old was the hero of India’s second World Cup triumph in 2011 which was captained by Dhoni. He had scored 362 runs in eight innings including four fifties and one century. In addition to that, Singh being also a spinner took 15 wickets in nine matches and was India’s second-highest wicket-taker after Zaheer Khan.

Singh also said that the current team does not a person who can speak to the players not only on-field but also off-field. "This Indian team needs a good guy who can talk to them on matters off the field. Their off-the-field issues reflect on their on-field performances. What they need is a psychologist of authority who can guide them in personal issues. Make them better persons. We had Paddy Upton who would discuss other issues of life, like fear of failure, and it helped us so much. The team probably needs someone like him", he further added.

Meanwhile, his heroics were not only limited to the World Cup tournament. He had constantly proven a match-winner in several matches including which involved the six sixes against England and the Natwest series. However, he announced his retirement in June last year. The legendary cricketer has scored over 11,000 international runs in the 304 ODIs, 40 Tests, and 58 T20Is. He averaged 33.92 in Test matches, 36.55 in ODIs and 28.05 in T20Is. He also took a total of 148 wickets in all three formats of the game.
