Uttar Pradesh, May 20: Indian Railways successfully operationalized its most powerful 12000 Horse Power Locomotive engine and became the 6th country in the world to join the elite club of producing high horsepower locomotive indigenously. It is also the first time such a high horse-powered engine has been operationalized on any broad gauge track in the world.

The Locomotive was commissioned into service at the Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction Station on 18 May. The train departed at 14:08 hrs in long haul formation for the Dhanbad Division of East Central Railway, consisting of 118 wagons which traveled from Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction to Barwadih via Dehri-on-Sone, Garhwa Road.

History:
  • The project was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on April 10 in 2018 under the 'Make in India' initiative.

  • The Made-In-India locomotive was manufactured at the Madhepura Electric Loco Factory along with French giant Alstom in Bihar.

  • The Madhepura factory is the largest integrated Green Field facility built to the highest standards of quality and safety with the production capacity of 120 locomotives and spread across a massive 250 acres.

  • The loco is named WAG12 with Number 60027.

  • Touted as the largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects of Railways, the Ministry of Railways and Alstom came together in 2015. An agreement worth 3.5 billion euros was signed to manufacture 800 electric locomotives for freight service and its associated maintenance.

Features of the locomotive:

  • The locomotives are state of art IGBT based, 3 phase drive, 9000 KW (12000 horsepower) electric locomotive.

  • The locomotive is capable of the maximum tractive effort of 706 kN, which is capable of starting and running a 6000 T train in the gradient of 1 in 150. WAG-12 comes with a twin Bo-Bo design and can be tracked through GPS with the help of embedded software.

  • During its trial run, the locomotive achieved a maximum speed of 120 km per hour.

  • It has hauling power of up to 6,000 tonnes.

  • It is capable of working on railway tracks with conventional OHE lines as well as on Dedicated Freight corridors with high rise OHE lines.

  • The locomotive has air-conditioned driver cabs on either side.

  • It is also equipped with a regenerative braking system that provides substantial energy savings during operations.

  • These high horsepower locomotives will help to decongest the saturated tracks by improving the average speed of freight trains.
This locomotive will be a game-changer for further movement of coal trains for Dedicated Freight Corridor. Moreover, the project will create more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country. More than Rs 2,000 crores have already been invested in the project by the company.
