Make in India on mark! Defense sector to acquire 26 items from local suppliers to develop indigenous weapons

New Delhi, May 21: In another approach to bolster the 'Make In India' initiative, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed the acquisition of 26 defence items only from local suppliers in order to develop indigenous equipment/weapons. It will also aid PM Narendra Modi's idea of India becoming 'self-reliant'.

The government has issued Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order 2017 to encourage Make in India and to promote manufacturing and production of goods and services in India.
 
"Under this order, the Department of Defence Production (DDP) has so far notified 127 items where purchase preference is given to local suppliers. In order to further encourage procurement from local suppliers, 26 items out of 127 already notified, have now been notified under the related clause of the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order," the statement read.
 
Therefore, procuring entities shall procure these items only from local suppliers, irrespective of the purchase value, provided that the local suppliers meet the Minimum Local Content (MLC) as prescribed for each item.
 
The order includes items used in Shipbuilding Industry such as helo landing grid, doors (Watertight & Weathertight), gemini inflatable boat, oil pumps, battery loading trolley, sacrificial zinc anode flanges, fibreglass cloth-E Grade, high-temperature gasket.
 
It also includes items used in defence manufacturing Industry such as 6mm to 100mm thickness weldox plate, 6mm to 100mm thickness hardox plate, electric motor, cable assemblies, MASS -R118, modulator, dual switched amplifier.
