Violinist and composer L Subramaniam have released 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' with greats like Pandit Jasraj and Birju Maharaj on 19 May.

The video features musical stalwarts including Pt. Jasraj, KJ Yesudas, Begum Parveen Sultana, SP Balasubrahmanyam, Usha Uthup, Kavita Krishnamurti, Hariharan, Anup Jalota, Suresh Wadkar and Sonu Nigam with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Voices, and instrumentalists from around the globe.

It also features Pt. Birju Maharaj and Hema Malini with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Voices. This song has over a hundred musicians in addition to the featured soloists.

The video, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, has been my dream since the lockdown, given that the whole world is affected by COVID-19,” says Subramaniam. “I took the verse I used for the 4th Movement of Bharat Symphony that the City of Chicago had commissioned to celebrate the 70th year of India’s Independence.”

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is a Sanskrit phrase which means – “The world is one family.” The original verse appears in Maha Upanishad (Chapter 6, verse 71) and also in the Vedas. This is considered one of the most important moral values in Indian society. This verse of Maha Upanishad is engraved in the entrance hall of the parliament of India.

The phrase is another demonstration of the all-inclusive attitude that our Indian tradition has. Unity in diversity is something that we have been practicing for thousands of years, the underlying belief says the same, we have emerged from one, the Brahman, the ultimate reality.

अयं बन्धुरयंनेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्

उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥

This phrase means “This one is my relative, that one is not!” Thus the petty-minded people think. But for the magnanimous hearts, the whole world is their family.

PM Modi has said this mantra on various occasions in many national and global platforms. He used this phrase in a speech at World Culture Festival, organized by Art of Living, adding that "Indian culture is very rich and has inculcated in each one of us with great values, we are the people who have come from Aham Brahmasmi to Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are the people who have come from Upanishads to Upgrah."
