Petition filed in Bombay High court against Mumbai Police Gag Order

Mumbai, May 28: The Legal Rights Observatory on Thursday informed that the Public Ineterest Litigation on behalf of Sheshnath Mishra filed against the Mumbai Police had moved to the High Court for listing matter of dissemination of fake news on Friday. "Advocates on Record are Mukesh Gupta, Ankit Dubey, Vikram Singh, Dhrutiman Joshi and Sr. Counsel Aabad Ponda and shall appear for arguments", it added.

The spread of Corona virus in India has led to a spread of lot of fake news and information amongst the citizens by way of Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram etc. Such type of information does anything but creates panic and confusion aong general public.
Aligning to this, the Mumbai Police has promulgated an order under section 144 Cr.PC prohibiting any person from dissemination of information through various messaging and social media platforms. Besides, the Police also prohibits any person inciting mistrust towards government functionaries and their actions taken in order to prevent spread of COVID-19.
 
"All persons designated as 'Admins' on messaging and social media platforms either by self or by allowing any member of the group shall be personally responsible for any such information being disseminated from a group administered by them", the official letter added.
