Chess Master Vishwanathan Anand to return to India after being stuck in Germany for over three months, f

Chennai, May 30: The five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will be finally reaching India late on Saturday. He was stuck in Germany for almost three months due to the lockdown imposed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

 

His wife Aruna confirmed the news. She said "Yes.. Anand will be returning today." Anand who has already departed on Friday night from Frankfurt will arrive Bengaluru via Delhi as he managed to catch an Air India flight (AI-120) which are the only scheduled flights from Germany and land only in Delhi and Bengaluru.

 

The five-time world champion will undergo 14 days quarantine as per guidelines imposed by the Karnataka government. "He will complete quarantine procedures and come to Chennai as per protocol," Aruna Anand said.

 

Earlier, he was in Germany to play in the Bundesliga chess league and was to return to India. However, he had to stay after the pandemic broke out forcing all the sporting schedules to postpone or cancel.

 

Meanwhile, he was staying near Frankfurt and was doing online commentary for the Candidates tournament which was called off mid-way due to the pandemic and led the Indian team in the Online Nations Cup early this month.

 

Anand had been in touch with his family in Chennai on a regular basis via video calls and kept himself busy with chess-related work.
