Washinton DC, May 04: 'The US government is very confident to have a vaccine by the end of the year', US President Donald Trump asserted while addressing a forum at Lincoln Memorial on Sunday. The statement seems to have grabbed everyone’s attention as several public health officials had earlier stated that the process may take more than a year to develop a reliable COVID-19 vaccine.

Trump added that companies like Johnson & Johnson, one of over 70 firms around the world currently working to develop a coronavirus vaccine, was getting "close" to having a vaccine ready for public use.

“We are pushing supply lines. We don’t even have the final vaccine,” Trump said, adding that “many companies are, I think, close,” citing pharmaceutical maker Johnson & Johnson by name.

Trump also said that he would be happy if another country beats US researchers and develop the medicine, saying "if it's another country I'll take my hat off." He further added that he doesn't care, who will develop the vaccine first, he just wants to get a vaccine that works.

The efforts to make a vaccine to treat the coronavirus infection has already intensified around the globe. Moreover, Oxford University's research team is also working on coronavirus vaccine and they have said that their vaccine if it proves effective, could become available in the market by September 2020. According to the World Health Organization, at present several coronavirus vaccines are in the development phase.

According to the latest data from the World Health Organisation (WHO). the number of COVID-19 cases in the US has risen past 1.15 million while the death toll stands at 67,674.
