Rome, May 6: Italian medical researchers claim to have successfully developed the world's first coronavirus vaccine which is likely to work on humans. The tests were reportedly been carried out at Rome's infectious-disease Spallanzani Hospital further resulted in encouraging and well beyond expectations.

According to the latest reports, Luigi Aurisicchio, CEO of Takis stated that for the first time the candidate vaccine has neutralized the COVID-19 virus in human cells. He added that this is the most advanced stage of testing of a candidate vaccine created in Italy.

The Italian scientists conducted the test on mice and after a single vaccination, the mice developed antibodies that neutralized the COVID-19 virus in human cells. The test proved that the vaccine formed blocks the virus from infecting the human cells and human trials are expected to begin after Summer.

After observing the five selected vaccine candidates that showed a large number of antibodies, the researchers selected two who responded the best to the vaccine. The vaccine candidates are being tested based on the genetic material of DNA protein spike and have shown resistance to COVID-19 cells.

They are injected with the so-called "electroporation" technique, which consists of an intramuscular injection followed by a brief electrical impulse, helping the vaccine break into the cells and activating the immune system.

Researchers also believe that this makes their vaccine particularly effective for generating functional antibodies against the "spike" protein, in particular in the lung cells, which are the most vulnerable to coronavirus.

"We are working hard for a vaccine coming from Italian research, with an all-Italian and innovative technology, tested in Italy and made available to everyone," he said.

Moreover, not only Italy but many other countries including the US, the UK, and Israel are claiming to have developed vaccines and crucial drugs to treat the deadly virus. Earlier, Israel's Defence Minister Naftali Bennett on Monda, claimed that his country has made a significant breakthrough towards the treatment for the deadly virus.

Italy is one of the world’s hardest-hit countries in the coronavirus pandemic, allowed about 4.5 million people to return to work on Monday after nearly two months of lockdown.
