Bridenstine confirmed the news on Tuesday and said "NASA is excited to work with the actor and the move would "inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists." He also revealed that the movie will be shot on The International Space Station (ISS).

Cruise will be the first Hollywood A-lister to appear onscreen from outside the planet's atmosphere. However, the plot details of the film have not been revealed, but it is not a sequel to 'Mission: Impossible' franchise. SpaceX is slated to launch astronauts to space from U.S. soil for the first time in nearly a decade later this month aboard the Crew Dragon, which would dock with the ISS.

Musk and SpaceX have yet to confirm their involvement in the film venture, but Musk responded to Bridenstine's tweet with one of his own, saying it "should be a lot of fun."

Cruise is known for his daring acts, doing his own dangerous stunts while making his films, mainly for his action movie series Mission: Impossible. He scaled the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, for the 2011 movie Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol. For Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Cruise hung onto the side of a plane. And for Fallout, he performed a HALO (high altitude, low opening) jump 106 times for a sequence.

Cruise’s next film is “Top Gun: Maverick,” in which he reprises his role as Captain Maverick, a test pilot and flight instructor had to postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The producers moved 'Top Gun: Maverick' off its July 12 release date to Dec. 23, 2020.
