16 migrants run over by goods train in MH; CMO announces Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to families of deceased

Mumbai, May 8: At least 15 migrant workers, who were sleeping on the railway tracks while going back to their native places were run over by a goods train between Maharashtra's Jalna and Aurangabad on Friday, confirmed the Rail Authority. The dreadful incident is said to have happened somewhere at 5:30 am in the morning.

Condemning the accident, PM Modi tweeted, "Extremely anguished by the loss of lives due to the rail accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Have spoken to Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal and he is closely monitoring the
situation. All possible assistance required is being provided".
Also, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackrey announced Rs 5 lakhs each as ex gratia to families of the deceased in Karmad train accident. "The injured have been directed to undergo proper treatment at government expense. Talks are on with the Center to release as many trains as possible for foreign workers and laborers and arrangements will be made for the return of all soon", the CMO tweeted appealing to the workers not to lose patience.
Meanwhile HMO Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said were pained beyond words at loss of lives due to the accident in Maharashtra. "The Rail accident in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district is extremely tragic and unfortunate. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured", Rajnath Singh tweeted.
 
The development comes at a time when stranded migrant labourers across the country are returning to their home states amid the nationwide lockdown. Some of these migrant labourers were forced to walk long distances to their home states as they were unable to find transport. The labourers, who had been walking along the railway tracks fell asleep due to exhaustion, unfortunately forever.
