Global COVID-19 death crosses five lakh; cases cross 1 crore-mark

New Delhi, June 29: As the coronavirus pandemic is growing exponentially in the world, the global tally of the cases crossed the 10 million mark on Sunday whereas the death toll has suppressed half-million globally. Meanwhile, the worldwide death toll has doubled in just over seven weeks. The spike comes as many hard-hit countries are easing lockdown restrictions despite health experts' warnings that the pandemic is still in its infancy.

 

 

According to Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 data at 10 PM on Sunday, the death toll due to the global pandemic touched 5,00,390. The global tally, on the other hand, reached 10,099,576 cases. North America, Latin America, and Europe each account for around 25% of cases, while Asia and the Middle East have around 11% and 9% respectively, according to the tally based on government reports.

 

While two-thirds of the total confirmed cases are in the US and Europe. According to the university, the US has the highest death toll - 1,25,747, Brazil is next at 57,622. The UK has remained the third worst-hit place at 43,550. On a good note, 54.45 lakh people have recovered from the deadly disease.

 

India on Saturday recorded more than 19,500 COVID-19 cases in a single day for the first time while the total number of cases in India crossed the 5 lakh mark as of June 28. While 3,09,712 people have been cured so far, there are still 2,03,051 active coronavirus cases in India. The pandemic has also claimed the lives of 16 thousand people in the country.

 

The total number of cases continued to increase at a rate of between 1-2% a day in the past week, down from rates above 10% in March. Countries including China, New Zealand, and Australia have seen new outbreaks in the past month, despite largely combating the local transmission.
