Constitution guides the government: PM

New Delhi, June 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that his government follows and abides by the Constitution of India and that is why the government does not discriminate on the basis of religion, sex, caste, race, or language and works for the welfare of all the 130 crore Indian citizens.

He was addressing the 90th birth anniversary celebrations of Rev. Dr. Joseph Marthoma Metropolitan via videoconferencing the Prime Minister said that he had not taken decisions sitting in the airconditioned rooms in New Delhi. The government has taken policy decisions after assessing and understanding the ground realities and people’s aspirations, he said.

The Prime Minister said that the Marthoma Church is connected to the honest thoughts of Saint Thomas, the apostle of Jesus Christ. With this thought only, the Marthoma Church has worked towards bringing positive transformation in the life of the Indian citizens. They have done great service in the fields of education and health.

Modi said that Rev. Dr. Joseph Marthoma has dedicated his life to the society and nation’s betterment and has contributed especially to the eradication of poverty and emancipation and the empowerment of women.

Rev Dr. Joseph Marthoma is the 21st Metropolitan and Head of the Marthoma Syrian Church of Malabar with headquarter in Kerala. The Christians associated with this church believe in St. Thomas’ thoughts and teaching. Marthoma in Syriac language means St. Thomas.

Till the beginning of the 20th century, the Marthoma Christians were confined to some areas of Kerala but now they are found in other states of the country besides North America, Europe, Middle East, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
