TN govt allows Siddha medicine treatment for Covid-19

Chennai, July 10: When allopathy and homeopathy are struggling to find a suitable and effective treatment for COVID-19 or Coronavirus, the Indian traditional Siddha practice of Medicine is attracting attention in Tamil Nadu following the state government allowed its use in Coronavirus treatment.

According to a report published in a leading daily, the state health secretary J Radhakrishnan has said that Siddha is a traditional system and an add-on therapy. “Those who are not showing full-fledged infection, empirically opt for Siddha therapy. We are closely monitoring the Siddha centers in Chennai, those who need oxygen supply are immediately shifted to government hospitals. We are planning to set up Siddha centers across the state,” he said.

Tamil Nadu has two Siddha Medicine Centers in Chennai and people are shifting to this treatment as the state government has authorized its use in Covid-19 treatment. The Tamil Nadu government is also contemplating expanding the facility in other parts of the state.

The total number of patients who had sought this Siddha treatment for Covid-19 stood at 1036 on July 8, according to Greater Chennai Corporation data. The corporation said 725 patients have been discharged and 311 are currently admitted at the center.

The initiative for popularizing this treatment is taken by Dr. Veerababu, a State-certified Siddha practitioner. Each patient shows different symptoms and they are treated accordingly, he said.

“We do not allow asymptomatic patients here, all the patients admitted here are symptomatic. I advise the asymptomatic patients to be in-home quarantine. We have diabetics, patients with blood pressure, and with other co-morbidities. Those with mild symptoms recover in a week and those with heavy symptoms take more than 10 days,” Dr. Babu said.

No chemicals are used in this treatment. Only herbal medicines are used, Dr. Veerababu said adding that the natural herbs do not put the lives of the patients at risk. There are zero cases of death at Jawahar Engineering College center he said adding that this is an example of the quality of treatment being provided to the patients.

Besides, the patients are allowed to do yoga, walking, and playing games like cricket which give much-needed relaxation. If any patient needs oxygen support, he is directed to the government hospital, Dr. Babu said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Thanikasalam Veni of Rathna Siddha Hospital in Chennai claimed to have formulated a herbal treatment that can cure the Coronavirus.

Speaking to a news agency, he said: "We have formulated a medicine from an extract of herbs. It is very effective to cure any type of viral fever. Coronavirus has no medicine. In China's Wuhan where Coronavirus has claimed over 50 lives, experts have no idea how to cure the disease. Our herbal extract medicine is used to treat dengue, multi-organ fever, and acute liver fever."

"We want to tell the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Chinese government that our medicine is very effective in treating multi-organ failure in corona fever condition," he said.

The Siddha doctor claimed that the medicine formulated by him along with his team treats infections caused by the virus within 24 hours to 40 hours.
