His body was found in the balcony of a shop near his house at Bondol in Hemtabad, Uttar Dinajpur district, on Monday morning. "Ray was found hanging near a shop at Hemtabad area this (Monday) morning. We have started an investigation. A forensic team has reached the spot and his body has been sent for the post-mortem," a senior district police officer said.

According to the reports, BJP leaders and his family members have alleged that he was murdered. BJP tweeted, "Body of Shri Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad, a reserved seat, in Uttar Dinajpur, was found hanging like this in Bindal, near his village home. People are of the clear opinion that he was first killed & then hung. His crime? He joined the BJP in 2019." The BJP has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the lawmaker’s unnatural death.

Meanwhile, his family members of the MLA claimed that he was killed and hanged later.

BJP president JP Nadda expressed "shock" at Roy’s "deplorable and suspected heinous killing" and condemned the incident. “The suspected heinous killing of Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad in West Bengal, is extremely shocking and deplorable. This speaks volumes of the gunda raj and failure of law and order in the Mamata Banerjee-led government. People will not forgive such a government in the future. We strongly condemn the incident,” he tweeted.

West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankar has also called for "impartial" probe. Tagging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said, " Political violence and vendetta @MamataOfficial shows no signs of abating. Death of Debendra Nath Roy, Hemtabad MLA-Uttar Dinajpur District, raises serious issues including allegations of murder. Need for thorough impartial probe to unravel truth and blunt political violence."

Roy had won the Bengal assembly elections from Hemtabad on a Communist Party of India (Marxist) ticket in 2016 but joined the BJP last year.
