MP Governor Lalji Tandon passes away; PM Modi, President Kovind, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh express grief

New Delhi, July 21: Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon breathed his last on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 85. PM Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh pay condolences to the family of Lalji Tandon.

The governor was admitted to a private hospital in Lucknow on June 13 after he complained of fever and urinary problems. Further, Medanta Hospital director, Prof Rakesh Kapoor, was quoted as saying that he had undergone a minor surgical procedure for liver malfunction after which his condition worsened. He was put on a ventilator. Later, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel was given the additional charge of Madhya Pradesh in view of Tandon's poor health condition.
 
 
Born on April 12, 1935, Lalji Tandon is survived by his wife Krishna Tandon and three sons. The governor has served as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad for two terms as well as the Leader of House of the Council. The veteran leader was elected to the Vidhan Sabha thrice and was a minister in BJP and BSP-BJP governments.
 
He was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Lucknow by a margin of more than 40,000 votes in May 2009. As a Governor of Bihar, Tandon was praised for streamlining the academic activities of the state universities. On 20 July 2019, Tandon was appointed as the 22nd Governor of Madhya Pradesh, replacing Anandiben Patel.
 
"Shri Lalji Tandon will be remembered for his untiring efforts to serve society. He played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. He made a mark as an effective administrator, always giving importance of public welfare. Anguished by his passing away, " tweeted PM Modi.
 
 
Further, he added, "the governor was well-versed with constitutional matters. He enjoyed a long and close association with beloved Atal Ji. In this hour of grief, my condolences to the family and well-wishers of Shri Tandon. Om Shanti."
 
"In the passing away of Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Lal Ji Tandon, we have lost a legendary leader who combined cultural sophistication of Lucknow and acumen of a national stalwart. I deeply mourn his death. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends" said President Ram Nath Kovind said.
 
 
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his deep grief over the demise of the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Lalji Tandon. In a tweet, the Union Home Minister said "Shri Lalji Tandon's entire life was devoted to public service. He added that as a public servant, Shri Lalji Tandon has left a deep impression on Indian politics and his death is an irreparable loss for the country."
 
 
"The news of the demise of Shri Lalji Tandon, Governor of Madhya Pradesh and a powerful personality of Uttar Pradesh, is very painful. I had the opportunity to work with Tandonji for a long time. His long public life has been devoted to the service of the people and he has left a distinct mark through his work," Rajnath Singh tweeted in Hindi.
 
"Tandonji was highly sociable by nature and also very popular among the activists. People of Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh still appreciate the development work done by him in various positions. May God provide patience and strength to the bereaved family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!" he added.
 
 
“He was the life of Lucknow. In his death the country has lost an able administrator, a popular leader and a committed social worker,” Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath said in a tweet.
 
Union textile minister Smriti Irani also tweeted her condolence for Lalji Tandon’s family. "I am pained to hear about the sad demise of Shri Lalji Tandon. A stalwart , Babuji helped pave the way for many youngsters, guiding us gently on our ideological journey. My condolences to Gopal bhaiya & family. Om Shanti," Smriti Irani posted.
