PM Modi lays foundation stone for Rs. 3,000 crore-Manipur water supply project

New Delhi, July 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Rs. 3,000 crore-Manipur water supply project as a part of Jal Jeevan Mission that bids to provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household of the country by 2024. He said that the North East has the potential to become the growth engine of the country's growth.

The inauguration ceremony was also virtually attended by Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla, Chief Minister N Biren Singh and his cabinet colleagues. "Today is a big day for millions of Manipur colleagues including Imphal. The Manipur water supply project is going to reduce water problems for the people here. This project is designed keeping in mind the needs of not only today but for the next 20-22 years, this project will also help generate employment for thousands of people," PM Modi said.
 
 
"This project will give clean drinking water to Greater Imphal and 1,700 villages in Manipur. It will provide a lifeline to these people," PM Modi said. He added that the project will also positively impact the lives of women in as many as one lakh families in the state. "This will be my gift of Raksha Bandhan to women of Manipur", he asserted.
 
The Jal Jeevan Mission will provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household of the country by 2024 with the motto 'Har Ghar Jal'. The outlay for the project is around Rs 3054.58 and is designed to provide freshwater household tap connections to remaining households in the Greater Imphal Planning area, 25 towns, and 1,731 rural habitations covering 2,80,756 households in 16 districts of Manipur. It is based on a community approach to water and has extensive Information, Education, and Communication as a key component of the mission. It looks to create a Jan Andolan for water, thereby making it everyone’s priority.
 
PM Modi further said that even in this crisis of Corona, the country has not stopped the development. He also expressed his sympathies to all the families affected due to floods in several parts of Northeast, He said Northeast is again witnessing massive losses due to heavy rains. Many people have died, many have had to leave their homes. I express my sympathies to all affected families. I assure you that the country stands with you in this tough time.”
 
Highlighting that the Manipur state government is working day and night to control the spread of coronavirus in the state, he emphasized that the state government has taken all steps to make necessary arrangements for the people of Manipur during the lockdown. He said that connectivity is extremely important for achieving prosperity and progress. He stated that this will not only enable ease of living for people in the state but also achieve the goal of creating a safe and self-reliant India.
 
He also stressed that tourism gets a boost with the setting up of modern infrastructure and the northeast is a great symbol of India's natural, cultural diversity & cultural strength with having the true tourism potential including Manipur that is still unexplored.
