PM Modi inaugurates Supreme Court Building jointly with Mauritius PM

New Delhi, July 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth on Thursday jointly inaugurated the new Supreme Court building in Port Louis through video conferencing. The new Supreme Court Building is an important landmark in the city center symbolizing the strong bilateral partnership between the two countries.

PM Modi congratulating the Mauritius government said, "First of all, I congratulate the Government and people of Mauritius for effective management of the COVID-19 global pandemic. I am happy that India was able to support this effort through timely supplies of medicines and the sharing of experiences." The new Supreme Court building was completed with Indian assistance as part of New Delhi's thrust on cooperation with countries in the Indian Ocean Region. Senior members of the judiciary from Mauritius and other dignitaries from both countries were present during the occasion.
 
 
 
Celebrating yet another landmark in the special friendship between India and Mauritius, he said, "The new Supreme Court Building in Port Louis is a symbol of our cooperation and our shared values. Both India and Mauritius respect our independent judiciaries as important pillars of our democratic systems.This impressive new building, with its modern design and construction, is a mark of this respect.Our partnership is destined to soar even higher in the coming years".
 
In October 2019, Prime Minister Modi and the PM of Mauritius had jointly inaugurated the Phase -I of the Metro Express Project and the new ENT Hospital project in Mauritius, also built under the special economic package. Under Phase-I of Metro Express project, construction of 12 km of metro-line was completed in September last year, while work on its Phase -2 envisaging 14 km of metro-line is ongoing. Through the ENT Hospital project, India assisted in the construction of a 100-bed state of the art ENT hospital in Mauritius.
 
Speaking about the Metro project and a new state-of-the-art hospital, he said, "I am happy to know that both these projects are proving useful for the people of Mauritius," he said. Further, he said, "It was in Mauritius that I had first spoken about India’s vision of ‘SAGAR – Security and Growth for All in the Region’. This is because Mauritius is at the heart of India’s approach to the Indian Ocean region." He said that with Mauritius, India shares not only the waters of the Indian Ocean, but also a common heritage of kinship, culture, and language.
 
The new Supreme Court building project is one of the five projects being implemented under the ‘Special Economic Package’ of USD 353 million extended by the Government of India to Mauritius in 2016. The project has been completed within schedule and below expected costs. The building is spread over an area of more than 4700 sqm with over 10 floors and a built-up area of around 25,000 sqm. The building exhibits a modern design and green features with a focus on thermal and sound insulation and high energy efficiency.
